"Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord;
keep watch over the door of my lips."

The Bible talks a lot about our lips, our speech, and the power of words. Did you know the word "lips" is referred to over 100 times in the Bible? ("Tongue" over 100 times, "words" over 500 times, and "mouth" over 400 times.)

Words can uplift (Prov. 16:24) and destroy (Prov. 15:4). Words can trigger anger or defuse it (Prov. 15:1). God detests lying words (Prov. 6:16-17, Ps. 12:2-4) but seeks those who speak the truth (Ps. 15:2).

What exits the door of your lips is evidence of what is in your heart (Luke 6:45).

James warns us to keep a tight rein on our mouths (1:26). That can be a daunting task – unless you allow God to set a guard over your mouth that will keep watch over the door of your lips!

Guiding Scripture...

Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Romans 12:2

September's Scripture

Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips.
(Psalm 141:3)

Write this scripture down and post it in a frequented area so it will become a part of your mind, your heart, and your soul.

Listen to the words you speak today.

Are they pleasant as honey or bitter as gall?

Do they uplift or destroy?

Are they evidence of a worldly heart?

Or are they evidence of the Spirit of God who is living within you?

Are you as kind to yourself as you are to others?

Are you as kind to your family as you are to others?

Do your words praise God or hurt Him?

Words, indeed, carry the power of life and death.
Today and everyday, examine your words.
Guard them carefully.

Let what comes out of your mouth be evidence of
the life-changing power of Jesus Christ!

PRAYER

God, too often my mouth utters words that are
NOT praiseworthy.
They are words that destroy rather than build up.
Set a guard over my mouth, Lord!
Keep watch over the door of my lips!
Teach me to be quiet.
To edify others.
To sing praises to You!!
