The Name of God
Is Holy
(Read Luke 12:1-12; Hebrews 10; Leviticus 24:10-16)
"Our
Father Who art in Heaven. Hallowed by Thy Name."
"Thou
shalt not take the Name of the Lord, thy God in vain."
"Blessed
be the Name of the Lord."
These are
familiar words, so familiar that sometimes the importance slips by us. Read them again,
and youll see that the name of God is Holy!
Which
explains a statement by Jesus that is sometimes misunderstood "And everyone
who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes
against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven." (Mark 3:29) The Hebrew word for
blaspheme means to curse or libel; to violently puncture, perforate or pierce. The Greek
word for blaspheme contains two components: blapt (to injure, hurt, or to hinder by
injury or harm) and pheme (fame, rumor). It means to speak impiously about God, to
defame Him, or to speak evil of Him.
There is a
story in Leviticus about the son of an Israelite woman. A fight broke out between this
fellow and another Israelite, and the son "blasphemed the Name with a curse."
Knowing the third of the Ten Commandments, the people waited for God's punishment. In
keeping with the times back then, the fellow was ordered stoned to death.
These are
not Levitical times, so you won't be stoned to death for misusing the name of God, but a
purposeful misuse of God's name won't go unnoticed. God's name is holy! Look at what James
said, "Above all, my brothers, do not swear -- not by heaven or by earth or by
anything else. Let your "Yes" be yes, and your "No," no, or you will
be condemned." (James 5:12 NIV) |
Guiding Scripture...
Be transformed by the
renewing of your mind.
Romans 12:2
July's
Scripture
Do not misuse the name of the Lord, your God, because
the Lord will punish anyone who misuses His name.
(Deuteronomy 5:11 HCSB)
Write this scripture down
and post it in a frequented area so it will become a part of your mind, your heart, and
your soul. |
In ancient times, the name of God was so
holy, it wasn't even spoken. Today, however, the name of God is too frequently tossed
around in a trivial, frivolous or demeaning manner.
You probably don't use God's name as in a curse.
But do you ever say, "My God!", "Good Lord", "Oh, my God!"
"Jesus Christ" or other names of the Deity when you are happy, surprised,
disgusted, afraid, angry or frustrated? Beloved, that's misusing the name of God!
Cursing God,
swearing by God, misusing and abusing the name of God negates the holiness of His Name and
insults the Holy Spirit of God. God wasn't kidding when He said, "Do not take the
name of the Lord, thy God, in vain!" |
